A thoughtful note, a few coffee samples, and labels finally seen in their intended place. Mahalia Coffee was a reminder of why we love what we do.
There is something deeply satisfying about watching a label stop being a flat, two-dimensional piece and begin doing the job it was intended for — to represent a product, carry a brand, communicate something important, or help bring a finished item together. It is without doubt one of the genuine pleasures of this work.
We were reminded of that recently when we received a parcel from Mahalia Coffee with labels to colour-match. Along with the samples was a note from Mahalia that read:
Also some coffee to run through the work machine to enjoy since the bag is so big!
Digging into the bag, as pictured above, we were greeted with the aroma of whole beans, dressed in labels we had seen moving through our production floor, now taking their place on the finished product.
It was a simple thing, but personal and thoughtful in a way that immediately tells you something about the person and the business behind the product.
That sense of personality is part of what we have always liked about Mahalia Coffee’s labels. Now, having seen the final product with the labels in place, they feel complete — not just as printed pieces, but as part of something with a distinct identity.
Looking across the range, what stands out is how transportive they feel. The artwork suggests romantic, faraway destinations, and each label seems to carry its own sense of place . Together, they give the impression of stories gathered from different corners of the world — something shaped by travel, experience, atmosphere and flavour. Whether or not that is precisely the intention behind them, it is certainly the feeling they leave with us, and it suits the brand well.
That sense of character feels fitting for Mahalia Coffee itself. Based in Robe, South Australia, Mahalia Coffee has built a strong reputation for quality, care and consistency over many years. What began with a desire to serve excellent coffee in their café grew into a dedicated roasting business with a clear point of view and a deep understanding of flavour. There is a sense that coffee is approached not simply as a product, but as something to be refined and handled with care.
Perhaps that is why the packaging feels so resolved. It does not just identify the product. It expresses something of the personality and passion behind it.
We are pleased to play a small part in helping products like these come together so well. And it was especially nice, in this case, to be reminded — with Mahalia’s note and the enclosed samples — that there are real people behind the work at every stage.
